Waitrose & Stephenson make RSPO Palm Oil Commitment

Waitrose underlines industry-leading palm oil commitment Waitrose has been awarded 100% (nine out of nine) by WWF for its commitment to sourcing sustainable palm oil.

  • 100% of the palm oil in Waitrose products certified as sustainable (CSPO) by December 2012
  • 68% so far achieved (fully certified sustainable palm oil).
  • Waitrose is absolutely committed to transparent labelling and always labels palm oil as ‘palm oil’ in its ingredients list – never ‘vegetable oil’ or similar
  • Waitrose is the first UK retailer to use the RSPO logo

Says Riyaz Dhalla, Senior Technologist, responsible for the implementation of the Waitrose palm oil strategy: “We realise just how important it is that we move our palm oil supply to a more sustainable framework and have been - working for a number of years to reach our challenging commitments – we’re really pleased our work has been recognised in this way by WWF.”

The recognition from WWF follows praise for Waitrose from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), who last month announced a surge in uptake of Certified Sustainable Palm Oil, and singled out Waitrose as a ‘good example’ for its commitments.

Waitrose soap accounts for 40% of the retailer’s total palm oil use. The conversion of all Waitrose soap to contain 100% certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) affects around 700 tonnes of palm oil, in 21 different soap bars.
