Together we tackle another Tough Mudder

Another year has passed which means it’s time to tackle another Tough Mudder, this time Yorkshire.

We relish the challenge, working as a team and pushing to the end. It’s fair to say working as an effective team is crucial to our success as a business, whether it’s a new product, an exhibition, making soap, or being creative it all matters which is why Tough Mudder is fast becoming an annual team event here at Stephenson for the team spirit it creates.

Here’s a glimpse of our pain…Mudder on!

So…Tough Mudder events are hardcore obstacle courses designed to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie. With the most innovative courses, over one million inspiring participants worldwide to date, and more than $5 million raised for the Wounded Warrior Project, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world….and we can vouch for that.

A dull and grey start start greeted most of us as we met at the Stephenson HQ, this time sharing cars and hitching lifts up to Broughton Hall in Skipton. Our team was excited, anxious, but ready to take on the challenge. For many of our team this was our second Tough Mudder and the wise heads knew just what to expect thoughout the challenging 11 mile course.

The event was again well planned and organised with plenty of volunteers on hand to assit in making sure you were ready for the pain. We assembled for our 9:20am start and changed into our ‘Keep Calm Make Soap’ T-Shirts.

To get through mud, fire, ice-water, and 10,000 volts of electricity you’ll need teammates to pick you up when your spirits dip. To get over 12 foot walls and through underground mud tunnels, you’ll need teammates to give you a boost and a push. Tough Mudders are team players who make sure no one gets left behind.

There are pleanty of Facts you can find, but here’s the most important one. FACT – You cannot complete a Tough Mudder course alone. At first we thought this may not be the case, however, we can confirm this Fact is 100% true. Which made the Challenge even more enjoyable.

So what are the actual challenges you may ask, here are just some of the obstacles to illustrate what we tackled…

Arctic Enema

This obstacle is all about mental grit. Many athletes use ice baths for recovery, but you’ll have a difficult time relaxing your muscles in this frigid dumpster. First you must bravely jump into Big Mudder’s floating iceberg abyss. Once submerged, find the mental and physical strength to swim through the ice, under a wooden plank and pull yourself out on the other end before you become hypothermic, this is almost unbearable.

Island Hopping

You must leap frog from pad to pad if you want to make across and staying in one spot for too long will make it nearly impossible to get moving again. This obstacle will test your speed and agility more than anywhere else on the Tough Mudder course. It was great to see many of our team getting straight across this (James, Chris, James Kelly, Olivia & Lucy)

Walk the Plank

Test your fear of heights and cold all in one with the 15 foot high jump into freezing water. Don’t spend too much time pondering your leap – Marines at the top of the platform will chew you out, or worse, push you into the freezing depths below.

This really hit our team hard, the Mud Mile….is literally as it sounds, life sapping, heavy set mud. The purest of mud…You have to work (and work hard) through up to a mile of waist-deep sludge as you try not to lose your shoes, and frankly the will to live. Balance and coordination are required if you want to make it through this obstacle without face-planting…many of us were lucky to be part of the Legionnaires a group of experienced Mudders that were able to take on an additional 3 challenges before the end just to sap the last bit of energy you have.

Finally 3 and a half hours later, after Climbing, Crawling, Running Swimming, Falling, we’re so happy and proud to have completed this together for a second time.

We’re now officially Mudders in fact experienced Mudders, which is a great feeling. It’s all about the enourmous sense of accomplishment that you feel when you overcome these challenges as a team.

WELL DONE TO THE TEAM – James, Chris, Olivia, Alex, Anthony, David, John, Lucy, Nick, Rhyss, Russell, Angela & Rachel. Along with everyone that came to support the event!

If you’re cotemplating giving Tough Mudder a go, just do it. It’s hard, it’s real, it’s not a race it’s a Challenge. We’ll see you again next year Mudders!
