At Stephenson, we understand the unprecedented speed at which the beauty and personal care space is evolving. From shifting consumer values and tightening regulations to supply chain disruptions and innovation demands, brands face growing complexity. Yet, amidst this flux lies opportunity. But to stay ahead of the curve requires the ability to adapt with speed, focus on sustainability, and forge smart partnerships.
We work closely with brands, formulators, and manufacturers around the world. Read on as our Head of Growth, Tim Pulleyn, offers his insights into three key trends driving change in the beauty and personal care industry, and how Stephenson not only helps brands to navigate these challenges but thrives in them.
1. Sustainability is non-negotiable
As the very notion of sustainability moves from being a marketing message to a business imperative, consumers of beauty and personal care products will continue to demand green claims backed by credible standards. To do this, brands must show clear and measurable progress towards reducing their environmental impact.
At Stephenson, our goal is to embed sustainability into everything we do. Since 2019, most of our solid bases have been manufactured using RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil, and by 2026, we aim to certify 85% of our supply chains. In addition, we are growing our focus on green chemistry solutions through developing ingredients through our enzymatic esterification capability, which uses lower heat during processing as well as a range of renewable raw materials. In addition to our focus on more transparent supply chains, we can assist brands to reduce their water and plastic packaging impact by championing solid and waterless formulations. Whether your next product is a shampoo puck or a solid body cleanser, we help brands deliver less waste without ever compromising performance.
2. Agile relationships are a critical part of business
Geopolitical instability, volatile markets, and shifting trade relationships have made supply chain disruption the new normal. Whether it’s conflict in key shipping regions or fluctuating tariffs between global powers, uncertainty is everywhere.
That’s why agility is baked into our approach. With over 50 countries in our distribution footprint, and a recently upgraded £1 million innovation facility at Horsforth in Leeds, we’re uniquely positioned to support brands with rapid turnaround, scalable production, and reliable quality - even in these unpredictable times.
By acting as innovation partners rather than just suppliers, we enable brands to bring their new ideas to life faster and more efficiently. Our investment in automation and flexible and multifunctional ingredient solutions like Durosoft means we’re ready to adapt when the market shifts, so that our partners don’t get left behind.
3. Regulatory reform redefines trust
As environmental concerns take centre stage, regulators around the world are tightening the rules when it comes to raw materials sourcing, water usage, and packaging. In 2025 and beyond, regulatory compliance will be more than a checkbox, but a de facto trust marker.
The EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and proposed Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR) are just current examples of legislation shaping the future. These changes will challenge brands to rethink everything from sourcing and formulation to packaging and distribution.
In addition, the proposed European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is set to come into effect for large companies at the end of 2025. Stephenson applauds all initiatives that work towards a more sustainable palm oil industry and is proud to be part of a major market that will continue to fight deforestation. Looking to the future, Stephenson will continue to provide brands with safer, smarter, and more sustainable solutions that align with global regulatory trends.
Whether it's understanding the impact of new EU regulations or navigating diverging policies in the US, we offer the expertise and agility needed to respond with confidence.
